Mariame N’Diaye, Senegal, 2023

SYNOPSIS:
In the 1980s, Sira, a young Malian woman, leads a peaceful life in France with her husband Malick and their daughter Abi. Their daily life is conducted in Soninké, the only language Sira knows. When Abi struggles with French at school, the institution suggests placing her in an adaptation class and advises the parents to prioritize using French at home. Sira opposes this recommendation. 

BIOFILMOGRAPHY:
Mariame N’Diaye is a Senegalese director who began writing film and theater projects in 2017, focusing on themes such as the celibacy of young women and the experience of the French language by immigrants. Langue Maternelle is her first short film.
