SYNOPSIS

Our Land, Our Freedom tells the story of two extraordinary Kenyan women – a mother and daughter, Mukami and Wanjugu Kimathi. Mukami was a freedom fighter in Kenya’s 1950s independence movement, and was married to its iconic leader, Dedan Kimathi. He was hanged by the British in 1957, his body disposed of anonymously.

 The film is told through the unique lens of 2 Kenyan women filmmakers: Meena Nanji is of Indian heritage, 2nd- generation born in Kenya, and Zippy Kimundu, is Kenyan and lives in Nairobi, after doing her MFA at NYU. They joined forces in 2016, with the common aim of challenging British accounts of the colonial era in Kenya, which is still taught in schools around the world. When they met Wanjugu and Mukami Kimathi, they knew that the film would centered on the experiences of these two extraordinary women, and the freedom fighters who actually fought for Kenya’s Independence
