Ruth Hunduma, Ethiopie, 2023

Ruth was a teenager when her mother entrusted her with a medallion engraved with a golden portrait of Nefertiti. This piece of jewelry symbolizes her mother’s unimaginable ordeal: captured by Mengistu Haile Mariam’s communist military regime during the Red Terror genocide in Ethiopia. The story follows her earliest memories of this period and how she came into possession of the medallion during her escape. The medallion represents her freedom and was passed down to Ruth to keep their family’s and country’s story alive.
