FESPACO was founded in 1969 in Ouagadougou, capital city of Upper Volta, which became Burkina Faso in 1984. Formerly the capital of the Mossi Empire, Ouagadougou has been transformed over centuries into a cosmopolitan megalopolis, whose current dynamism and creativity make its charm and notoriety. Ouagadougou is the ultimate repository of the Memory of African Cinema. As such, it is the only city in the world with a Filmmakers’ Square where each edition of the festival is punctuated by a ceremony held in memory of filmmakers who passed away. The ceremony brings together film professionals and festival-goers from all over the world. At this square is the Filmmakers’ Avenue, starting with statue of famous Senegalese Director, Sembene Ousmane.

FESPACO 2019: the Ambassador of France reassures the Minister of Culture of the support of France to the fiftieth edition

This Wednesday, November 21st, 2018, Mr. Abdoul Karim SANGO, the Minister of Culture of Burkina Faso, received in audience Mr. Xavier Lapeyere CABANES, the Ambassador of France in Burkina Faso at the headquarters of FESPACO. This visit is in line with the 26th edition of the biennale of African cinema, which will be held from 23rd February to 02nd March 2019.


“Seeing how to restore the films of the very first African Cinema Week in 1969 in order to put them at the Festival’s disposal, seems to us essential. Then we have to prepare the French Institute under optimal security conditions in order to allow a normal and serene screenings of the selected films of Fespaco 2019 “said De CABANES.


He added, in essence, that France will be officially present through its Minister of Culture.


The Minister Abdoul Karim SANGO welcomed the visit of the French Republic, which played a historic role in the creation of Fespaco. He naturally hailed France for its willingness to accompany Fespaco, which is about to celebrate its golden jubilee in 2019.

On December 12th, 44 days from the FESPACO 2017, scheduled from February 25th to March 4th, the National Organizing Committee was set up by the Burkina Faso Minister of Culture, Mr. Tahirou BARRY. Above all, he urged both to show voluntarism and self-sacrifice in order to drive the boat safely.

Composed of a coordination and 19 commissions, this committee is chaired by Mr. Bémilè Stanislas MEDA, Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism.
